Stateline Woodturners
May 9, 2026 Club Meeting
Visitors: None.
Show-N-Tell, Novice: Entrants were:
· Buzz P. with an Ash bowl he turned from a blank he chose in previous raffle, finished with gun stock oil.
· Patrick M. with a lidded box (his second not a pen turning) from oak finished with Mahoney’s Walnut oil.
Patrick won best in this category with his lidded box.
Show-N-Tell, Advanced: Entrants were:
· Tom A. with a captured ring on a goblet which was left too thick due to a catch when working the base resulting in a re-mounting issue. He purchased a captive ring tool ($60) but thought using it was a pain. He also brought a large spiral segmented candle stick holder made in four pieces.
· Mike S. with a small, short captive ring bowl on a stand in white oak finished with walnut oil, where he ground an allen wrench for cutting the captive ring. He also brought a small lidded box with four corner points on the base and the lid (with a top center finial) made from cherry burl and hard maple.
· Mike E. with two huge inner-linked captive segmented rings in pine and cherry, suspended by fishing line within an arched support with a base, with which he used a cole jaw chuck.
· Ben J. with a large figured honey locust bowl which had done the first turning on 1 or 2 years ago.
· Frank E. with a dozen or more pens made mostly from walnut and sapele with different finishes.
Mike won in the advanced category for his large captive segmented rings.
June President’s Challenge: Turn something thin.
Kaden’s Cause: Ben displayed a thank you card received from this organization for the urns the club has provided them. John A. stated that we were 1 of only 3 clubs providing urns for them and they need an average of 10 a month. John collects these for the club and mails them (on his dime) to Kaden’s Cause periodically. He currently only has 4, so encouraged others to continue turning out urns for this charitable cause.
Rogers Historical Museum: Debe Krogman stated that the new display (for this quarter) of club member’s works looks very nice and includes a large vase that barely fit in the case.
Rogers Historical Museum Family Day: This event is right around the corner on June 6th. The club will be demonstrating wood turning and passing out tops as in years past. Volunteers are needed to man lathes, and anyone with extra tops are asked to contribute them as the turning is hard to keep up with the demand from the kids.
SWAT: Ben promoted the next symposium August 28-30th in Waco sponsored by the Southwest Association of Woodturners.
VA Pen Program: John A. said the first event will be May 22nd 9 to 12 when 5 veterans will be driven up from Fayetteville for the opportunity to turn pens. Club pen turners are still needed to help. Contact John Adams if interested.
Ron East Wedge Sled: Ron East has requested a picture of his wedge sled (for segments) from whoever purchased it, since he has found access to a lathe and other tools in Iowa and cannot recall the details of how it was built.
Defibrillator: Paul M. found that replacing the battery in the club’s defibrillator is not practical, and instead we will need to purchase a new one. He is researching the purchase options and will report back at a future meeting.
Club Classifieds: Ben announced that he has lots of turning blanks and first turned bowls available for sale, which are listed on the club’s website under the Member Resources tab (select Classified). Other members are encouraged to also use the web site to list items they would like to sell.
Bring Back Raffle: There were 8 items raffled off, with the first winner being Bill C. who chose Patrick M.’s pen with stand.
Walnut Logs: Ray T. was contacted via our Facebook page by a lady with lots of walnut logs she would like to sell. Contact Ray for more information.
Demonstration by Paul M. of Turning a Duck
Paul learned to turn a duck from a Tim Yoder video. It involves off center turning and uses three pieces for the body+head, a hat, and a nose. He has provided instructions available in the download section of our web site under Member Resources > Documents > Member Documents titled Paul M. Turn a Duck.
