October, 2016 Meeting
The October 8, 2016 meeting was called to order by Pres. Michael Guidry, leading the group in the
Pledge of Allegiance.
The club welcomed our guests, Brad McBride, Gene, and Peter Petersen.
A sign-uop sheet was passed around for demonstrators for 2017 for both 2nd & 4th Saturdays.
Additionally, members were reminded that the building is locked on the weekend and arriving late
could result in being locked out of the building and missing the meeting. We need volunteers to be
greeters at each meeting and make sure everyone can get into the building. Also, we need
volunteers to step up and learn our audio-video system.
The board has elected officers for 2017 as follows:
President – Ben Johnson
Vice-President – Kip Powers
Sec./Treasurer – Ken Ness
Program Chairman – Les Brandt
Nominations were taken for the “at-large” board member and Denny Frieze was elected by
unanimous vote.
Michael announced that we had a box of 5x5” bowl blanks from Northwest Figured Woods, donated
for our charitable contribution to the “Empty Bowls” project, sponsored by Panera Bread.. Members
were encouraged to make a bowl, and reminded that the deadline is November 1st.
No one had any safety issues during the past month.
ESSA, the Eureka Springs School for the Arts, has broken ground on a dedicated woodworking
facility. Les Brandt suggested we consider using the facility and helping promote the school's efforts
to promote woodturning. It was suggested we might hold one meeting quarterly at the facility as an
alternative to meetings in Rogers, and that the facility be considered for all-day trainings with
nationally-recognized turners.
We had a great turnout for Show-n-Tell with nearly 3 dozen pieces exhibited. Our judges were Dan
McKenzie and Thurman Hatch. We had ties in both the Advanced and Novice categories. The
Advanced winners were Kip Powers for a green-turned persimmon platter and Mick Hutchison for a
segmented platter featuring a box pattern. In the Novice category the winners were L.H. Moore and
Gerald Krogman for outstanding pieces of segmented turning.
The Bring-Back Raffle winners were John Harris, Ben Johnson, Mick Hutchison, Billy McClaine., Kip
Powers, Bob Schmidz, Thurman Hatcher, Gerald Krogman, and Guy Braughler. All members were
encouraged to bring something next month for this club fund-raiser.
Our demonstration was made by Ray Taylor. He turned a hollowed Christmas ornament out of
Maple burl and Mesquite. This was Ray's first time to demonstrate, and he did an excellent job.
